Through the 2003/2004 hunting seasons, a number of our customers BETA tested one of our newest bullets, the .45 Colt/Casull 280 grain WFNGC profile. This bullet seems to be the ideal weight for mid-range loads both for the SAA clones, when seeking a heavier bullet than the traditional 255 grain, for the Smith and Wesson 25-2 as well as the host of Ruger revolvers chambered in .45 Colt.Carrying an impressive .370” frontal meplat diameter, this projectile cuts a tremendous permanent wound channel in game, with an authoritative “smack” factor, even when pushed to modest velocity levels. Recoil is greatly reduced from those loads using 300 grain loads at similar velocity levels, and the accuracy produced, even when pushed to only 800 feet per second is quite impressive.
Further enhancing the versatility of this bullet, is the application to lever action carbines. This bullet has a profile and nose length that feeds smooth as butter in most all Winchester 94’s, Marlin 1894’s and all 1892 clones chambered for .45 Colt. A .400” nose-to-crimp length, with a bullet overall length of .672” equates in a bullet well suited even to short cylinder revolvers, and a generous remaining case capacity when crimped into the well-defined crimping groove. Too, when loaded in .454 Casull cases, it functions in all revolvers chambered for the round, as well as the Puma ’92 lever action as well.
For those desiring a bullet of greater weight than traditional .45 Colt bullets, yet not needing or wanting the punishing recoil of 300+ grain bullets, this new offering from Beartooth Bullets is the bullet for you! A gas check makes this a perfect high-velocity bullet candidate in both the lever actions as well as the .454 Casull chambering, as even when pushed to nearly 2000 fps., two fully filled lube grooves and a Brinell Hardness of 22 insure that it doesn’t lead when bullet diameter is matched to barrel dimensions.
Field reports from customers during the 2003/2004 using this bullet virtually all reported “golf ball” size permanent wound channels through game, with well hit game either dropping on the spot, or traveling less than twenty feet before collapsing. Game harvest reports ranged from mule deer, to whitetails, elk, black bear and feral hogs using this bullet from both lever action rifles and carbines as well as revolvers. There were no reports of recovered bullets, all projectiles exited the game harvested!
