Carry a couple of medium-duty spring clip type carabineers in your hunting pack. They are very light weight and the perfect tool for those who use tree stands. Use one carabineer on each end of the rope you will use for lifting up your rifle, bow, and whatever else you take into the stand with you. They have a large enough opening and reach to be clipped over the sling of a rifle, the riser on a bow, or just about any piece of equipment you might take into a tree stand with you. Clip the other end onto your belt or belt loop while climbing into your stand. They are really easy to manipulate with gloves, and far easier to manipulate and more secure than knots in a rope, especially when hands are numbed with cold or working in cover of darkness. Carabineers also work well to secure pack straps to your tree stand if you use a portable type. Once in the stand, use the carabineer to secure yourself to your safety strap. They are about the easiest thing to clip on and off and make dealing with safety straps much more convenient when cold or using gloves.
