During the early part of hunting season, hornets and yellow jackets can be a real nuisance. You can have a camp free of these pests in one day! Use either Ortho Sevin or Diazinon, and mix according to directions for a mixture appropriate for control of hard to kill pests. Take your mixed insecticide and mix it into a half pound ball of very fat ground beef. To mix, take care to use either disposable plastic or latex gloves, or cover your hands with plastic bags, and knead the insecticide into the meat until it is well mixed. Generally an ounce is plenty for a half to three quarters of a pound of meat. Place the meat up, out of the reach of kids, dogs, and other domestic animals. If the meat is out in the open in this fashion, the hornets and yellow jackets will feed on the meat, and if the insecticide isn't too strong, they will take it back to their nest. It is imperative to use a screen fabricated from 1/4" galvanized hardware cloth to shield this treated ground meat from access by birds, as this mixture will prove fatal to Canada Jays, Steller's Jays, Grey Jays, Magpies, and any other birds that would feed upon the ground meat. Be responsible in using this technique to protect the birdlife around your camp! When the yellow-jackets or hornets take the meat back to the nest, you effectively kill the whole colony in less than two days! It really does work. Also, if you have any fish of any kind, you can "marinade" it in the insecticide solution overnight then put it out for the same results as that with the ground meat.
